After reading several Yelp reviews about how good this place is, I reluctantly decided to give it a try. I ordered the Whitefish bits as an appetizer. They were extremely fishy tasting and not of good quality. For an entree, I ordered the boneless wings; half sweet chipotle and the other half Caribbean jerk. I was charged extra for splitting the flavors, which I thought was strange. However, the wings themselves were good quality.

Nice place to go, good atmosphere. A bit of a local sports bar feel. Place was clean with a good menu. Staff was very polite. Men's room was laid out a bit funky with a urinal behind the door. Could be an awkward moment using that urinal and getting hit by the door. I would come back.

Great food, service and location. Highly recommend paper bag fish and plank fish. Most dinners in 12-16 price range.

  • Lindsay C.

Boyfriend and I were in town for the night. We both ordered the whitefish basket. It was very delicious and was a very good serving. The staff was very on their toes and nice!

  • Chris C.

Typical American food, delicious up north fried fish(we had the Perch). Fries were just ok. We had the Parmesan Garlic traditional wings. They are really good. Very crispy and the sauce was really good. Service was friendly but slow. If the weather permits sit outside, they keep the inside freezing with the A/C.

  • Rachel R.

I was a bit leary because of several bad reviews on service, but we had a great experience. Chuck F was very attentive server. Food was good. Not awesome. But good place for a bite to eat and drink.

  • Jamie J.

Fish tacos (whitefish) and margaritas were amazing. We also got clams which were great! Yummy soft and moist dinner rolls!!! Authentic and fresh! You can taste the difference!

  • Philip H.

Great Food Great service! This is must try! Outside patio really enjoyed the meal! Nice views of the bay. Perfect weather!

Good clean place. Good location. Staff were nice. Food was horrible. Very bland and over priced. Worse food we had on our trip to the U.P. And we went all the way to Hancock, MI. We never will eat here again. My fish taco was gross. My husband olive burger has just olives and mayonnaise with no lettuce or tomato. Very bland.

    (1)
  • Catherine C.

Beer was cold but food was terrible! Ordered a cheeseburger & they brought it out with no lettuce, tomato or onion & bun not toasted. Fries seemed like they had been in the bottom of a freezer for years. Fast food would have been an upgrade. Salad lettuce was wilted. My sisters fish plate was disgusting and filled with bones & skin. Waitress seemed annoyed by everything. This place seems fine for a beer or drink but skip the food!

  • S.E. A.

Nice bar atmosphere (though not a full bar.) Great view of the lake from the outside deck. We had mussels, planked whitefish, and blueberry pie. All perfectly good, but would have liked more vegetables with the fish and better ice cream on the pie. It's Michigan in summertime, after all!

  • Michael K.

The atmosphere is not bad, good location, and good decor. Unfortunately the same can not he said for the food. Food should only be ordered after a few of the draft beers. The nachos we right out of a microwave, the chicken wings were cold inside, and the service did not help. All in all I would come again but eat before or after. Beer selection and atmosphere are good.

  • Wilbur P.

We came here after we got off the ferry from the mackinaw island for lunch. I had the club sandwich & my wife had the Nochos. They were both vary delishus. I would recommend this place. It was pretty load though. Sat out side & watched the trafic go by & the boats heading out.

  • Mark M.

My son ordered the nachos and they arrived cold, so the cheese was hardened and turned the whole plate into a nasty glob. What we did eat of it wasn't very good at all. The misses had a very bland salad and my fish in a bag was pretty boring as well. The worst though was I had to constantly be aware of the ceiling. They had us under an air vent that was condensing and we were in constant worry of it dropping on our food.

    (1)
  • Mary Anne T.

Cute place with friendly staff. My husband had the planked whitefish and said it was very good. I ordered the garlic shrimp, which was meh. We rolled into town at 9pm and were just happy to find something open!

  • Shane H.

Got the yellow perch. It was actually real yellow perch. It was pretty darn good. Free shuffle puck was a plus. Nice place overall, fast , friendly staff.

  • Tracy N.

Wonderful food and good prices. Their fish tacos were amazing. Great atmosphere. Been to St Ignace several times and this is the first time we've eaten there. Clean, fast, friendly service. You won't be disappointed.

  • Linda P.

Come to this restaurant every time we're in St Ignace. Great food and exceptional service. This time I had the Irish Nachos, wonderful and just enough. White Fish is also primo.

The Walleye "tacos" are tasty! However, they ain't tacos they be burritos! Decent beer also and the dude behind the bar was friendly.

This place has a great view of the lake and island. This is a place where you could watch the fireworks on Saturday nights from. There is a good beer selection. The Fish in a Bag was really good. There are pool tables and a juke box. We sat on the patio, and it took awhile to get served initially. However, once a server did finally come, we had good service from then on.

  • Ellyn I.

Sat in the bar to get view of the Mackinac Island ferries and were also seated more quickly on this busy Sat evening. Great service! The broccoli and potato soup had other veggies and bacon pieces and was very satisfying on this chilly day. DH's Seafood Fettuccine was so-so. could have had more seafood. I had Rod and Reel appetizer with tasty, well-cooked lightly breaded whitefish pieces. Great tartar sauce but I was disappointed with the whitefish spread that also came in the appetizer. Lots of mayo and not much whitefish so it was far from what I expect from WF spread in the U.P.

    (3)
  • Craig J.

Very good Whitefish, I had the basket and my wife had the planked whitefish. Both were very good. Service was quick and attentive. Prices were what one should expect for decent fish. Decor was a little lacking and kitschy but it was clean and the food was very good. It can be hard to find quality food in a tourist town, but this place does it.

  • Mona M.

Love this place. We always stop here on our date nights. They have a great menu and super friendly staff!

    (5)
  • Lisa M.

This is an excellent place to have dinner and watch the fireworks on the bay...on their outdoor patio. Get there early for a good seat...there is limited outdoor seating. Cheese curds, boneless wings, sweet potato fries & chili were good. Service was a little slow, but we were in no hurry. It was a great relaxing evening.

    (5)
  • Jillian P.

Really good food... I would give five stars except the mussels gave my husband and I food poisoning and our night was ruined. Don't order the mussels! ! ! They were so delicious but so dangerous to my colon and esophagus. Blech.

    (3)
  • Leonard S.

Dinner on August 17. Had whitefish cooked in parchment with potatoes and veggies. Very nice. Mussels appetizer was excellent as well. But the blueberry pie, homemade and not always available, was just terrific! Ambience very warm and inviting. Did not sample salad bar, but it appeared to be adequate although not exceptional. Service was good.

    (4)
  • Dan S.

Was ok. None of our meals were real standouts but after a long day, it was nice not to have to cook. Other comments about service were accurate.

    (3)
  • George P.

Meh. The food was ok...not bad, not great. Service left a lot to be desired. Looooong waits for a spoon (!) and our check. Our waitress would disappear for 10 minutes at a time, and it wasn't that busy at all. We were on the sports bar side. Probably would not go back.

Went to the Driftwood on July 4. Incredible Whitefish basket with onion rings. Great service. Wonderful view. Highly recommend it.

    (5)
  • Jackie E.

Whitefish is amazing. Service not great, but still my favorite place to eat in St. Ignace. Pick whitefish bites for appetizer. Yum! Or...a whitefish on a wooden plank. Yum!

    (5)
  • Erica S.

Overall we had a good experience at driftwood. We had our two small kids with us who weirdly love salad, and our waitress said no problem to them eating salad with their kids meals. We enjoyed the salad bar too- especially the jalapeño ranch and buffalo ranch dressing. I had the planked white fish. It was served beautifully on the wood plank surrounded by fluffy mashed potatoes piped around the edges. The fish was fresh and tasty, but the potatoes a little bland. My husband had a steak and fish combo, I think it was perch. The steak was not good. Dry, kind of mealy, and although it was only slightly overcooked (medium instead of medium rare) it had a burnt taste to it. My son's cod fish sticks were fantastic and the kids pizza was pretty good too. Service was nice and friendly.

    (4)
  • Michael G.

Wow! Great fish dishes, super clean, and a salad bar that's immaculate and ever-filled to the brim with fresh salads and veggies and the home-made soup was such a treat on a coolish evening. I had the white fish served on a cast iron skillet with a white wine reduction with all the fixins' for $12. It was fabulous!! My wife had the planked white fish with perfectly roasted vegetables and ringed with duchess potatos for $13. And this was better yet! Yes, by all means, if you;re in the area you gotta drift into the DriftWood!

  • Amy P.

This restaurant is okay, but not amazing. They do have a nice patio with a pretty view of the water. I got the thin and crispy pizza--it was thin, but was loaded up with cheese, which made it floppy and greasy. Though, as Mel Brooks (or possibly Sharon Stone, depending on your quote source) said, "Sex is like pizza, even when it's bad--it's still pretty good." My husband has the whitefish in a bag; he said it was also okay--but not great. So, it's not a bad place for a bite--but you may be able to do better.

    (2)
  • Chandra P.

The broccoli and cheese bites and thin and crispy pizza was awesome! Best place we visited in the area. They even serve Michigan wine. Staff was very friendly and attentive. (We sat on the Sports Bar side) We highly recommend this place!

came to st. ignace in march. despite all the snow being melted, was let down to find many of the local businesses still closed until spring. stopped by here for lunch, got a buffalo chicken wrap that was on special and the soup and salad bar was pretty decadent! bar and restaurant were separate, but attached. bar had pool table/hockey/jukebox/etc and looked to have a bunch of tasty local brews on tap! and free wifi!

Love this place. Our favorite place to eat in st ignace.

  • Cara S.

I'm from the city so I'm new to this whole warm and inviting atmosphere thing. The food is quite good, I got the Cuban sandwich but the 10+ people at my table all enjoyed their food as well. The salad bar is good too. Service was kind and quick. The deer heads on the wall only freaked us out a little bit.

  • Patrick O.

Passing thru, caught them on a Friday night, had the fish fry. Combo of whitefish & perch. Good battering, not too heavy and seasoned right. The sides of mashed potatoes and green beans were fresh & homemade, and prepared to be eaten & enjoyed versus left behind for the trash. I passed on the desserts because I was stuffed, but I saw many being served in dining room (nice looking pies, apple turnover), all also homemade and I bet they would've reviewed good too. Wife had strip steak, which I know was cooked to her liking because I swiped a bite. She had the salad bar which she said didn't have allot of options, not necessarily a bad thing. The bar had some designer dressings, eg buffalo-ranch, cucumber-wasabi, that we tried and left me wishing I chose to add the salad bar too. Solid service, rustic atmosphere,

Stopped at this place for lunch 3 day before 2014 Labor Day. Great Disappointment! Server seemed clueless an without training. After 30 min waiting for order she said that our order had been taken for someone else and that only the order for our kids were ready.... About 20 more mins and finally our order came in... My wife had fish but unfortunately she couldn't enjoy it for long. Thick black hair were bundled right in the the center of fish and poor girl had no guts for more food and I lost appetite.. I should've been louder to let other customers know. She took our plates without saying sorry. They wanted us to pay for three of the four meals. The pony-tailed cook came out of the kitchen, I told him I didn't finish my meal for I felt disgusted. He them charged for kids meal which weren't finished either. He left the desk without apologizing and cashier was rude and lacked customer service... Second time We find hair in our food and both in the upper peninsula... Horrible restaurant, horrible service and horrible, specially if you take your family for lunch after a long trip.. AVOID!!! DANGER!

When you are pretty much the only game in town after a certain time in the evening one could just rest on the "where else you gonna go" defense, not the Driftwood. We decided to escape from the parents and little niece for some brother (and sister in law) time and wandered on over as we were told aside from the casino it was the only place to go. Happy we did. Sat on the front porch in some comfy furniture more akin to a real front porch rather than a bar/restaurant. Their beer list has a number of local Northern Michigan small brews on tap and the staff is willing to make suggestions. Had a few of the Widow Maker Black Ale's with a appetizer combo plate. Delicious... So good we headed back after dinner up the street the following night.

Been here for dinner before and it was decent. Nothing around this area is really spectacular to eat but this place is ok. But came here for lunch and the lunch menu is all deep fried. Dinner has baked fish but for lunch everything is deep fried. Our waitress was super super slow. I don't mind not being rushed but she spoke slowly and seemed not to even know what her job was. After we got our drinks I just asked for the tab instead of staying for food. If your going to come here I would recommend only for dinner.

My wife had the crispy chicken salad, and enjoyed it. Found the ranch dressing to be very good. I had the beef burrito. If I had to describe it with only one word, I would say: Second worse burrito I've had in my entire life. It was microwaved, as evidenced by the hard as nails ends of the tortilla. Had lettuce and tomato on top, but sadly they got scraped off as I tried to trowel the garba, I mean "nacho cheese" (seriously, does anyone eat that process nacho cheese food junk on purpose?) that the top of the burrito was slathered in. The only burrito I have ever had that was worse than this tube of meat was at rojo in rochester. That was the worse day of my life.

Wtf is with the service at this place?! Some of the blue shirts can get you a drink. Others can get you a drink and run keno. Others can't do one of the two, and others can do neither. White shirts are supposed to be "bartenders" that can do everything, however, they will look directly at you while your beer is sitting on the inside rail (universal signal for another drink). Not the only one to complain about this tonight. Get your service shit together, Driftwood! Everything else is great. 2 stars for service only.

Irish nachos were quite interesting - potatoes instead of chips and I like them. My husband had beef pastie which was good for bar food. This was one of the last places open in St Ignace on a Saturday night so we were happy to get a meal! A man who came in just a little after us was told the kitchen was closed - so we shared with him. Nice bar, reasonably good and somewhat interesting food. Service was good at the bar where we ate.

Server admitted food wasn't made fresh and is prepared and frozen, I ordered the half pound of shrimp and received 7 of them for $14.

We had a group of 8 including kids and the Driftwood was the best place in St. Ignace to accommodate us, the food was reasonable priced. Very good quality with a good menu. Our waitress Rachael was so personable and friendly. We appreciated the service and enjoyed dinner. We will be back there this fall and the driftwood will be the place we go to. Wife had the Irish nacho's and like them - too out if the box for me so I went Olive burger. Better than the average bar for sure.

service is absolutely ridiculous!!!!!! why do they hire such miserable people to wait on the public. food is a 2 out of 10. whole family hates the service.

  • Erick H.

Stopped in for dinner on our anniversary, and we were not disappointed. The boneless wings were crisp outside and moist and juicy inside. The apple jelly sauce was good, but the Driftwood spicy sauce was awesome. Even bought a bottle for later. My wife had the daily special: Lemon Pepper Grilled Chicken with fresh Green Beans and Mashed Potatoes. Chicken and beans were good, mashed potatoes were real, but a bit bland. I had the Whitefish in a Bag with Potatoes and Veggies. It was amazing. Fish was tender and cooked perfectly, rubbed lightly with a great BBQ Rub. All-in-all we had an enjoyable meal. Would have given them five stars if our server would have been a bit more attentive (I had to go find some menus).

  • Melissa O.

Pretty good. The drinks were good and the food was much better than most other places in St. Ignace. I had the steak with the fettucine and enjoyed it. I also had a long island which was made from the mix but honestly wasn't too bad. One of the only 3 places I will eat in St. Igance.

Good service. Hostess very personable and accommodating. Waitress very attentive. Food good. Burger great flavor. Irish nachos are very unique and tasty. Menu has a good variety as well. Good selection on kids menu too.

Sports bar was perfect spot to watch the Bears game - lots of other Chicago fans besides us. Had pizza and Caesar salad. We went back for dinner again and had mussels. What an unexpected treat. The sauce is amazing. Had the planked white fish - a must. Great service. Definitely recommend.

Let me start by saying that my husband hasn't shut up about the Planked Whitefish since we ate here...a month ago. We travel fulltime and although we are still in Michigan he is afraid to order the whitefish anywhere else for fear that it will suck the memory of how delicious his meal was at Driftwood. Our waitress, Maria, was entertaining and helpful...simply the best. Truth be told, we weren't expecting much when we walked in as it has that motel dinner kind of vibe but you really should try it. Funny thing is, my hubby doesn't really care much for fish (he's a steak and lobster guy...I can't remember the last time he ate fish) but he wanted to try a 'local' dish and it doesn't get any more local than Whitefish. He was beyond pleased with his meal and nothing since has compared...it's making eating out very difficult. I had the salad bar and stuffed mushrooms and enjoyed every bite. Go try it!!

I have yearned to eat the best FISH fry forever. Especially baked/grilled fish. After a tiring 7 hour drive to Mackinac island, before boarding the ferry we went in here for lunch. Luckily, we found a special of the day - the Mackinac famous "White fish" grill with baked potato on top to give it a crusty edge. We customized our order to wood grilled. It came along with a salad + bleu cheese dressing. The salad quenched our thirst and refreshed us. Then came the Mr.Fish + crisp grated Potato on top. The perfect fish I have ever eaten in my life! Succulent in the inside, crispy on the top. I wish I drove to St. Ignace yet again for just the white fish.

Where in the sleepy hamlet of St. Ignace can you have a huge pasta dinner, a fresh salad bar (with soup) and pie and then come back the next night to watch football, eat pizza AND order pie and a six-pack to go and nobody bats an eye at any strange request? The Driftwood. My fiance and I were in town to run the half marathon on Mackinac Island, but decided to stay on the mainland. And boy am I glad we chose the Upper Peninsula side of the mainland. Before the trip, the Driftwood seemed like the best bet for a decent carb-loading dinner before the Mackinac Island half marathon on Saturday. After the trip, it's all we could talk about. Friday night, pre-race: We went to the restaurant side, where we each ordered pasta (she, chicken rigatoni; me, lasagna) with the decked-out salad bar (jalapeno ranch dressing was fantastic) and soup. Everything was fantastic, tasty and huge. The perfect fuel for the race, followed by a delicious piece of apple pie. Service was very friendly and ridiculously fast. Saturday night, post-race: Looking for a place to watch football and have a light dinner, as we had a late lunch, we headed back to the Driftwood. The bartender recognized us from the night before and promised to turn on the game we wanted. We ordered the pizza bread, and he raved about how good it is and how we would be very happy. We ordered some beers and settled in. When the band arrived, he said they would probably play in front of the big screen, but we could still see. We decided to leave at halftime, so I said to him, "is it possible to get two slices of pie and some beer to go?" His answer: I'm not going to ask about the combination, but absolutely. Let me see what pie I have. We left with a slice of coconut cream, a slice of pumpkin and a six-pack of Bell's Two-Hearted. And the price for the pizza, three beers we had at the bar, two pie slices and the to-go six-pack? $40. Plus a big tip for our friendly, affable, non-judgmental and eager to please bartender. This is probably the longest review I've ever written, and for good reason. I can't say enough good things about this place.

The Whitefish on a plank is great! Service was rushed, but we were there on a Friday evening and it was busy... We will stop here again!

Ate in the restaurant side a couple of times. Very cozy atmosphere with a fireplace and whitetail mounts all around. Food is excellent and service was very cheerful both times. The soup/salad bar is a little bland; but if I was to go back I would probably opt to try some of their whitefish spread instead anyways. It sounded good, and being in the UP there is rarely a shortage of tasty fresh whitefish :)

Took a very long time for the waitress to take our order. Once our order was taken, however, it all came out very fast. But the initial wait to get our order taken was so long that we almost left. Table was unclean and we lo had to sit there a while or someone to clean it. Pretty gross.

  • Sonali S.

Only reason we were there was because it was the only place open at 10 pm. I got the so called famous white fish and chips but I have definitely had better. My husband's potato skins weren't too great or fresh either.

  • Orson B.

Had the plank whitefish and it was very good and very fresh. It was packed on a Saturday night but in spite of being told it would be a 25 minute wait, my party of four only waited four minutes. I don't understand why so many restaurants give these doom and gloom predictions on wait times when in reality, the wait is usually a fraction of the time they say. With impatient people like me, that can cost a lot of business that will just go elsewhere. From 25 minutes to four minutes? That's ridiculous. The only reason I didn't leave was my patient friends wanted to wait, but this time, I'm glad I did. I didn't get anything else, but at a fish joint, I thought it best to get fish. It was full of tourists, but that's what St. Ignace is all about in August. I would gladly come back because fresh fish is the only way to go in this maritime town. The waitress was overwhelmed and had everyone's order confused, but I don't care about that as long as they are pleasant and the fish is good, which it was.

Walked over here from our hotel for a little dinner. I had the chicken parm with a side of spaghetti and a single trip to the soup and salad bar. Even though we are so close i can see Lake Huron from the window, i didn't order dish because i don't care for it. My dinner was...acceptable. It wasn't bad but it didn't knock my sticks off. I wouldn't say i was upset because we weren't at an Italian restaurant so.... My husband had the whitefish and enjoyed it. The atmosphere was comfortable and open. Our waiter was very friendly and our food was hot. You can see a lot of locals here. Their conversations with the staff was on a friendly level. I enjoyed that! I would come back but maybe order a pizza or burger next time. Continue with the great attitudes and friendliness. I will remember that more than my dinner.

The Driftwood benefits from its location across from the shuttle boats to and from Mackinac Island. My wife and I were celebrating our 35th anniversary, and chose to spend the day on the Island, return to have dinner, and then signed up for a sunset trip around the bridge. It was a great day. Let me begin by stating I have worked for about 10 years as a manager for a couple of different casual dining chain restaurants and I am sympathetic to the hard work of restaurant employees, but also observant to the service steps that generally lead to a successful visit. As it was our anniversary, I told my wife I planned to be a generous in my tip. In regard to the meal, we wanted a nice meal for the special occasion. My server greeted us promptly enough. She brought our beverages (I asked for iced tea, my wife water and a glass of wine). We looked over the menu and were trying to decide what to order. We had arrived at the start of the dinner rush, because our server seemed to be in a hurry. She did not engage in conversation, or recommend much. My wife ordered the bourbon steak and I ordered the New York strip. I tried to order a side of 6 dinner rolls, but my server talked me out of it. Our food came in a reasonable amount of time. My guess was that my steak was not really a New York strip (I expect a strip steak to have a certain rectangle appearance, and to be fairly tender. This steak was oval shaped and had some very tough spots to it). My biggest surprise came when I asked for a second refill on my iced tea (the beverage was served in a 12 oz plastic cup, so with ice the actual drink is about 8 ounces.) I got a refill by asking, but on my second refill I was told only one free refill came with the drink. I was thirsty, so I paid an extra $2+ for the third beverage (almost $5 for 24 oz of iced tea). When I paid the bill, I still felt I was generous with my tip, but I did modify my generosity because of this beverage nonsense (the national chains I work for offer unlimited refills for the same price, and generally start with a 20- or 24- oz glass). We were able to make the sunset cruise and enjoyed our day overall. In terms of our dining experience, the meal was acceptable, the prices were very high (our overall bill was $60+ including a fried clam appetizer, my $5 worth of iced tea, an extra side of vegetables that I requested and didn't let the server talk me out of, and no dessert). The atmosphere was pleasant enough (very directed toward the "north woods" motif, with dead animals on the wall). I would just coach the staff on the floor to engage, even if they are busy, to ask where people are from or why they are there dining (with the tourist focus of the area, there is a lot of reputation filtering to places like Detroit, Chicago, or Omaha, NE, where I live).

This review is for the bar only, I did not try the food. Nice size sports bar with an outside seating area, friendly bar tenders, and two pool tables. Drinks were fairly well priced and there was a decent draft selection which the bartenders were knowledgeable about. I would rate this bar 4 stars if not for the really annoying Juke box. It played 30 second clips of songs when no one put money into it, which irked me and I ended up playing songs just to make the Frank Sinatra 30 second music blasts stop.

Would give 3.5 stars, but can't figure out how to do it (my bad). Came here in a Friday night during the truck show weekend--and by that I mean semi-truck weekend. Now I know why hotels were crazy expensive. This is a sports bar with a full menu. I sat at the bar, which was busy, but the staff were friendly and did a great job of handling their business. They had a lot of Italian things on the menu, including my favorite--Carbonara, but I was afraid to try. I instead went with the whitefish in a bag which is a house specialty( this is northern Michigan). It came out quicker than I expected, and I thought it was prepared in advance, -but the vegetables were al dente, which I prefer(except the potatoes which had been roasted). The fish seemed fresh, but I did need the tartar sauce that came with the meal. Overall I was pleased with the experience. It's not fine dining, but you can get a step or two above bar food.
